Thursday, July 18 - Sunday, July 21 | 11 AM - 5 PM
Friday, July 19 | 12 PM - 8 PM
"Soft Animals" explores the dynamic journey of artists as they navigate the complexities of parenthood. Inspired by Mary Oliver's poem "Wild Geese," the exhibit delves into the rediscovery of artistic practice amidst caregiving responsibilities. It examines how priorities shift, and art takes on new forms, serving as an escape, documentation, timekeeping, and meditation.
Featuring works by Jamie Hart of Great Barrington, MA, Tara Hogan of Fayetteville, NY, Megan Musgrove of Millerton, NY, Erica Recto of Millerton, NY, Jessica Jane Russel of Sharon, CT, and Filiz Soyak of Hudson, NY
June 8 – July 28
Just Drawing by Catherine Haggarty comprises twelve recent drawings surrounded by two vitrines. This exhibition showcases innate references to memory, grief, and iconography. Objects are anchored by their positions in space, calling attention to the ground and surfaces around them—an ode to craftsmanship and the hand, inviting viewers to consider shared and individual memories of home.
The Ungrateful Son by Dan Gunn presents larger-than-life-size, hand-built, stoneware toads along with three collaged works on paper. The series and exhibition title are taken from the Brothers Grimm fairytale, where the toad is a punishment for intergenerational disloyalty. Amphibians are seen as the opposite of princes, with contemporary examples like Kermit or the alt-right ‘Pepe.’ The work presents a swollen counterfactual version of a folk art object. Stoneware reinforces the relationship to American craft traditions and the use of the past to construct a political image for the present.
Saturday, July 20 | 3 pm - 5 pm
A closing reception for Just Drawing will include a conversation between artists David Humphrey, Jennifer Coates, and Catherine Haggarty about her work and drawing as a process, medium, and philosophy.
